New Bill To Add Click To Camera Phones
Published on Top Stories  |  January 27, 2009, 14:48

The latest addition to the legal list of the Congress is the Camera Phone Predator Alert Act, a bill meant to add an annoying sound to all digital cameras.

The bill has been introduced this month by Representative Peter King, Republican of New York. If the act was to become law, it would require “any mobile phone containing a digital camera to sound a tone whenever a photograph is taken with the camera's phone.”

Further on, the law would prohibit manufacturers to equip such phones with the means of disabling or silencing the tone. The Consumer Product Safety Commission would be the body in charge of enforcing it.

King may have a point is saying that “children and adolescents have been exploited by photographs taken in dressing rooms and public places with the use of a camera phone” and such a law may just slow down the phenomenon.

Then again, it remains to be seen just how annoying/loud would be that specific tone. Perhaps phone makers should be allowed to let users choose their own tones? I bet that would prove very popular with youngsters.
