Dubbed EcoGreen F1, the new HDD is said to need 15% less power than other 1TB products in its class. When compared to regular 1 TB HDDs, the power reductions goes up to 50%.

"Since 2003, Samsung’s hard disk drives have complied with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances and Brominated Flame Retardant directive," said T J Lee, vice president of sales and marketing at Samsung Electronics’ storage division. "The EcoGreen product line is designed to meet consumer demand for eco-friendly, high-performance devices with an optimised cost of ownership advantage."

Samsung’s HDD has a speed of 5,400rpm, a 3Gbps Sata interface and a 32MB buffer memory. Last but not least, it also features native command queuing.

The company stressed out that the low power and stability requirements of the new device make it an excellent choice for audio and video recording, as well as for surveillance apps.

Samsung’s new eco-friendly hard drive utilizes its low noise operation technology SilentSeek and NoiseGuard( to achieve a quiet operation system.

The EcoGreen F1 will launch in the second quarter of 2008 and will retail for  $199.00.
