The number one spot seems to be out of Microsoft’s mind. The Nintendo Wii, which was seen as the Cinderella of the gaming world some years ago, has a strong lead and the Redmond company knows quite well that getting ahead of it would be a nearly impossible task.

Then again, Nintendo is not Microsoft’s arch rival, but Sony. The first place may be out of reach, but the silver medal still looks shiny enough, especially if thus Sony ends up polishing the bronze award.

So it’x Xbox 360 vs the PlayStation 3:

"I’m not at a point where I can say we’re going to beat Nintendo," Xbox vice president Don Mattrick said during an interview with Business Week "We will sell more consoles this generation than Sony."

At present time, Nintendo Wii leads the sales race with 32 million units. Xbox 360 comes in second with 20 million consoles, while PlayStation 3 is last with 15 million sold units. However, Sony has been picking up the pace lately, while Microsoft has been slowing down its engines.
