The prediction was made based on the numbers of movies expected to be available for the two formats:

"Gartner expects that, by the end of 2008, Blu-ray will be the winning format in the consumer market, and the war will be over," wrote Gartner analyst Hiroyuki Shimizu in Gartner’s Semiconductor DQ Monday Report.

The analysis stated that the significant price cuts performed by Toshiba and other HD DVD backers may sustain the format for a while, but the lack of support from Hollywood moguls will have the final word on the matter.

At present time, there are six big Hollywood names under the blue banner (Sony Pictures, Buena Vista, 20th Century Fox, MGM, Lionsgate and Warner Bros), while HD DVD is only supported by two of them (Universal and Paramount).
