Any violation of the law would bring a $5,000 civil penalty to the retailer.
The Video Games Ratings Enforcement Act was introduced to the House of Representatives by Nebraska Republican Lee Terry and Utah Democrat Jim Matheson:
“Many young children are walking into stores and are able to buy or rent these games without their parents even knowing about it,” said Terry. “Many retailers have tried to develop voluntary policies to make sure mature games do not end up in the hands of young kids, but we need to do more to protect our children.”
Similar bills failed to become laws as they were branded to be unconstitutional. It remains to be seen how well will this bill do.
