Patent Trolling: Orinda Sues Sony
Published on Business  |  August 29, 2008, 12:18

Sony's newest legal battle will be fought against Orinda Intellectual Properties, a company specialized in suing other for various patent infringements.

The patent troll company claims that Sony has infringed upon patent number 5,438,560, which was originally filed bu Hyunday back in 1993. The patent in question describes the process of layering data on an optical disc.

The plaintiff filed the complaints against Sony Corporation, Sony Electronics Inc, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. Basically, the list includes every possible company that could be affected by the trial.

Orinda asks the court to put on hold the manufacturing, sales and distribution of all Blu-ray based devices, and PlayStation 3 is the main target. In addition, the company also demands "a reasonable royalty."

Sony has yet to unleash its army of lawyers upon the patent troll. At this time we're betting on the case being thrown out of the court or, in Sony's worst scenario, on the two companies settling out of court.
