Nokia Unveils New Strategy: Point, Shoot, Shop
Published on Telecom  |  December 14, 2007, 16:02

The latest idea under development at Nokia's Research Centre is the technology that would allow users to turn shopping into photography.

The new technology will be part of an upcoming camera phone. The concept is actually simple: phone owners won't have to stay in line to purchase the desired goods; they could just go through stores, shoot what they want and then order the items based on the taken photographs.

The shots will be scanned by image recognition software, which will to seek out the wanted item on the shop's Internet site and buy, if available.

Also under development at Nokia there is another software aimed at Japanese or Chinese menus. According to the company, the new software will scan the afore-mentioned menus and translate them into English.

Up till now, the software can interpret around 9,000 words in Chinese and only 600 in Japanese, the company said.
