Maserati Hacker Goes To Court
Published on Security  |  September 24, 2008, 16:02

You're never too old for breaking the law, that's what probably Bruce Mengler tried to prove when messing around with the Maserati’s network.

The 60-year-old Mengler has been arrested to charged with hacking into and attempting to extort money from the luxury car firm Maserati.

The story begins back in March, when Mengler broke into a Maserati website and managed to download the customers’ information. Later on, he sent Maserati an email saying he would make the information public unless he got paid.

Apparently, Mengler made his threats using a Google Gmail address: sol.beach@gmail.com. Unfortunately for him, the email was forwarded to the authorities and now our senior citizen hacker is only looking forward to the next court hearing, scheduled on October 31.

Even though the threat was removed, Maserati still got a black eye for the lack of security it offered. Hopefully, this incident will serve as a good lesson for the company, as well as for other firms that still aren't too keen on enhanced data security.
