RIAA has given up its lawsuits spree and now seeks to have copyrights infringers cut off from the web. The first two US ISPs to support this new plan are reported to be Comcast and AT&T.
RIAA's new three strikes plan is the same initiative being proposed in France and the UK: have the user disconnected if he fails to respect the rules. The plan would have the ISP warn the user two times for having downloaded illegal content. The third time's a charm and the ISP magic would turn into a “account suspended” spell.
Despite all the reports placing both Comcast and AT&T in the same initiative boat as RIAA, the two companies chose to remain quiet for the time being. Their silence is not that hard to understand: should they go public with this, customers would no doubt cancel their subscriptions and take their business to ISPs less eager to take a peek at their activities on the Internet.
Verizon, for instance, has been reported as opposed to such an initiative. No doubt that the company would gain a lot of new customers if the story above wuld be officially confirmed
